If you don’t have enough tears to moisturize your eyes, or the tears are lacking an essential ingredient, you may be suffering from dry eye syndrome. Normally, the glands in our eye work to produce the many important substances contained in tears. These substances help reduce evaporation, keep the salinity and acidity at proper levels, and have antibodies to fight infection. As we age, our glands change, and eyes tend to get dryer, especially after age 65.
There are other causes of dry eye, too: for example, an immune system disorder called “Sjogren’s Syndrome,” thyroid disease, or irregularities in the cornea. Sometimes, antibiotics, antihistamines, or diuretics could be the culprit. In any case, the symptoms are the same: eyes that burn in dry climates or pollution; a gritty feeling in the eye; being unable to produce tears when crying; or decreased tolerance to contact lenses. In severe cases, you could become very sensitive to light, have eye pain, or impaired vision. If you experience any of these signs, see a doctor right away. Left untreated, dry eye can scar the cornea, and cause permanent damage.
