Drooping eyelids can be caused by a variety of factors. Some people are born with the condition; others may develop it later in life. It may affect one eyelid, or both. Eventually it can impair vision. In most cases the drooping is the result of normal aging, which causes a loss of muscle elasticity. Usually this is merely a cosmetic matter, requiring no treatment. But if the sagging becomes so severe as to interfere with eyesight, most insurances consider this a medical matter and will cover the surgical costs. Eyelid drooping may also be due to allergic reaction and antihistamines or other medication may be prescribed. You will want to consult a health care provider if eyelid drooping is restricting your daily activities, appears suddenly, or is present with other symptoms.
